"SubRosa is a non-profit, donation-funded space for art and radical projects. We offer anarchist books and literature, live performances, gourmet coffee and a welcoming garden courtyard.
Literature available includes anti-authoritarian, ecological and anarchist books and zines. The space also houses the Anarchist Lending Library, featuring books on anarchy, Situationists, history, politics, ecology, and indigenous studies that might not be available in the local library. Computers are also available for use.
SubRosa is a space for people to come together to discuss ideas, read, meet friends, get involved with ongoing projects or be inspired to start their own.
SubRosa is maintained by a small collective and a vast network of people who care about the space. The collective is made up of local anarchists and anti-authoritarians who are long-time members of the Santa Cruz community and are involved in such local projects as the Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In and Free Skool Santa Cruz.
As anarchists and anti-authoritarians, we believe that people and communities are capable of taking care of themselves and, if empowered to control their own lives, are best suited to make decisions that effect them. We strive for a world where people can interact with each other freely, unmediated by capitalism or oppression."
I strongly encourage anyone who lives or comes through the Santa Cruz area to check this space out. I have been volunteering once a week with my free time as staff and it has been a great experience so far. Experiences range from talking about local radical projects, hanging out over a cup of coffee, talking to older people about their life stories (Today I talked to an amazing man from Switzerland who told me a good deal about the different places he lives growing up and the affects World War II had on his family. We even talked about his experiences in India where he lived for awhile which I was stoked on.), listening to people play music in the courtyard, viewing movies documentaries, reading awesome literature/books... the list goes on.
The space is non-profit and is run fully off volunteers. It is maintained by the sale of books/zines/coffee/etc and through donations. Come by and support the space! I work Wednesday mornings from 8 - 1! The space is located at the corner of Pacific Ave. and Spruce St. next to the bike church and across the street from the Saturn Cafe parking lot!
